Mount Carmel Diocesan General Hospital Diabetes Center leads the community in prevention and treatment of diabetes. It provides the patients and their relatives a comprehensive education on nature of diabetes, its signs and symptoms, complications and management. It was established on October 25, 2014 to assist communities throughout Quezon Province and beyond with diabetes and other related healthcare issues. The center is staffed by a certified diabetes nurse educator, trained diabetes educators, allied health care professionals and secretary. They help empower individuals to become an effective self-manager and to make healthier choices every day. To empower diabetic members, the center created the “Blue Circle Club”, which is open to all diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Lay forum is conducted every other month to address the body organs that are affected if complications of diabetes are not detected / treated or controlled. During lay forums, members were given free blood sugar screening; anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were taken and recorded. Zumba exercise was provided and snacks were served during activities. Lectures of brilliant speakers were tackled during the event. The education of diabetic patients is an ongoing process every day at Mount Carmel Diocesan General Hospital to the in-patients by diabetes nurse educator. Also, there are out-patients who avail of the same services as referred by the known endocrinologist or by their attending physicians.
