The Mount Carmel Diocesan General Hospital Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory is committed to provide comprehensive, quality, safe and affordable laboratory diagnostic services thru the collaboration of competent anatomic and clinical pathologists and staffs, enhanced by education and trainings.

The department provides diagnostic services to physicians and their patients through advanced laboratory examination and evaluation through a fully automated and state-of-the-art machines used for diagnostic testing. It has laboratory information system (LIS), bringing laboratory results to the digital age.

The Clinical Chemistry Section offers a wide range of examinations utilizing automated methods. It concentrates mainly on the chemical analysis of various metabolites, electrolytes and enzymes not only in the serum but in other body fluids as well.

The Hematology and Coagulation is a section that can service all departments including the Hematology-Oncology as well as consultative services in the diagnosis of various hematologic diseases and disorders. Procedures and services for the diagnosis and management of blood diseases as well as routine and specific tests for White Blood Cells, Red Blood Cells, Platelets are provided accordingly. Bleeding and clotting disorders requiring comprehensive evaluation and procedure is also provided by this unit through Protime and APTT.

The Clinical Microscopy being the most basic component of the clinical laboratory supports diagnosis of various diseases and medical conditions. The tests involves with the physiochemical microscopic analysis of various body fluids. These examinations are performed manually and/automated utilizing various reagents and kits.

The section of Microbiology of the department offers examinations for the diagnosis of infections caused by bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria, as well as emerging and re-emerging diseases. Most of the specimens received in the section are from respiratory sources (sputum, eta, pleural fluid, bronchial aspirates). Other specimens are urine, stool and other body fluids (CSF, synovial fluid, pleural). Bacteriology performs culture, identification and drug sensitivity testing using manual and automated methods.

The section of Immunology and Serology is focused on the services supporting the diagnosis of infectious diseases utilizing both automated and manual serologic methods. The section is equipped with automated machines not only involved in diagnostic serology but also do collaborative work with the blood bank section in the screening of blood units for infectious and blood borne diseases.

The MCDGH Blood Bank section caters patients needing blood transfusion, and our priority is to provide adequate amounts of safe blood in a timely manner for our patients. The blood bank supplies blood components like PRBC, FFP and platelet concentrate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is a Blood Bank with additional function, responsible for donor screening and selection, blood collection, testing, preparation, handling, storage, release and dispatch of all its blood products.

HIV proficient Medical Technologists and HIV Counselors are available every day for patients requiring diagnosis for HIV infection.

Out Patient Laboratory Services, a front line service of the Department, provides a range of laboratory examination essential in the diagnosis and assessment of the health of patients. The services encompass arrangement for requisition, patient preparation, patient identification, collection of sample, send-out preparation to referral laboratory and timely releasing of laboratory results.

In the field of Anatomic Pathology, the Section of Histopathology performs clinical activity associated with diagnosis during and post-surgery. Tissues are processed with the most modern equipment which allows an accurate diagnostic assessment needed by the doctors.

The aim of the Laboratory Services is not only to provide accurate results but also to deliver with a respect for ethics, confidentiality and safety of the patient.
